Tips for Staying Safe on the Road

The Washington State Department of Transportation provides safety tips for bicyclists and pedestrians traveling our fair streets:

For bicyclists:

• Follow traffic laws. A bicyclist riding on the road is subject to normal traffic laws and can actually be ticketed for failing to follow these laws.
• Use hand signals and eye contact to warn drivers of your intentions.
• Ride with traffic, never toward oncoming traffic.
• Never pass on the right. Drivers don't expect a bicyclist to pass on the right and may be caught off guard.
• Always be ready to brake if necessary.
• Don't wear headphones. They inhibit your ability to hear approaching traffic.
• Use lights when riding at night or during inclement weather.
• Scan the road ahead of you for any road hazards, such as gravel or construction.
• Wear a helmet.

While there is no Washington State law requiring bikers to wear helmets, it's common knowledge that helmets save lives in numerous bike accidents each year. Some cities, including Seattle, have local bike helmet requirements.

For pedestrians:

• Use sidewalks whenever available.
• Cross at crosswalks.
• Obey traffic signals. Wait for the green light to cross.
• Look both ways for oncoming traffic before crossing. While pedestrians have right of way, drivers don't always stop.
• Use a flashlight or reflectors when walking at night or in bad weather.
• Make eye contact with drivers. This way you know that they have seen you and that it's safe to go in front of them.
• Do not allow young children to play near traffic, and hold their hands when crossing a street.
